San Francisco, CA – June 16, 2025
In a scene reminiscent of a horror film, thousands—possibly tens of thousands—of bats swarmed across the Golden Gate Bridge at dusk on Monday, catching residents and commuters completely off guard.
The event, which began around 7:45 PM, saw the iconic bridge shrouded in a dark, swirling mass of bats as the sun dipped below the horizon. Eyewitnesses described the moment as “eerie,” “apocalyptic,” and “absolutely surreal.” The sky over the San Francisco Bay turned nearly black for several minutes as the swarm passed overhead, partially obscuring the structure in a thick, fluttering cloud of wings.
Local wildlife experts say the behavior is highly unusual for the region and time of year. Preliminary theories suggest it could be the result of shifting migratory patterns influenced by the recent spike in atmospheric pressure and temperature anomalies recorded earlier this month. Others point to disturbances in nearby ecosystems possibly forcing the bats out in search of new roosting grounds.
“I’ve lived here 30 years and never seen anything like it,” said Candace Miller, a San Francisco resident who was crossing the bridge when the swarm descended. “It was like something out of a gothic movie. The sound alone was terrifying.”
Experts warn that this could be an early sign of broader disruptions in regional wildlife behavior, potentially tied to climate shifts or urban expansion.
Residents are urged to remain calm and avoid direct contact with the animals.
